London Riots - 8th Aug

I'm stuck in an Irish pub on London Rd. in Croydon (aparantly just outside any police cordon). The copy-cat violence and looting seems to have reached the deep South of London.
I wonder if some of this activity is due in part to the Government's austerity measures? If you drive people into poverty, mayhap they might resort to thuggery and looting? Is this a result of global capitalism and the resulting loss of jobs in the UK?

Or is this due to criminal elements, gang culture and people who just like a bit of a ruck (cf football hooliganism in the 70s)?
